Waste Reduction and Prevention Consulting
Learn about our approach to waste reduction and prevention. The first step a waste audit. The data collected can help you fulfill certification requirements and drive reduction and prevention initiatives, as well as recycling programs.
Why do a waste audit?
Waste audits are done for multiple reasons:
- Baseline Discovery: Audits provide baseline data to use as a starting point for measurement and policy
- Target Setting: Waste composition shows which parts of the waste stream are significant and need action
- Compliance: Buildings that aim to achieve LEED or BOMA certification require audits for completion
- Performance Metrics: Volume, Weight, Capture Rate, Per Capita Generation
- Intensity Metrics: Waste per $1,000 of revenue, waste per production unit per hour
- Policy Conformance: Forensic waste data provides evidence of non-compliant behaviour

The Audit Process
Our waste audits can produce data for LEED 4.1 and BOMA 3.0 certifications. The scope of an audit is determined by the certification needs, budget and relevant targets and policy goals. A phased approach can also be used. Below are some individual components to consider.
Garbage Audit
What are the outcomes of a garbage audit?
1. Composition of the garbage stream.
2. What and how much recycling is in the garbage.
3. Overall picture of waste generation.
Recycling Audit
What are the outcomes of a recycling audit?
1. Composition of recycling streams.
2. What and how much garbage is in the recycling.
3. What and how much recycling is misplaced.
4. When paired with a garbage audit, adding recycling data provides Diversion Rate, Capture Rate and a complete picture of waste generation and areas for improvement.
System Audit
What are the outcomes of a system audit?
1. System/Infrastructure fit e.g. too many or not enough collection bins for the disposal system.
2. Education/Information gap e.g. what is the baseline level of knowledge and what is needed to use the system?
3. Policy and protocol fit e.g. Does the policy match with available infrastructure, or does the policy inadvertently create waste?
4. When paired with garbage and recycling audits, system audits reveal the specific context for behaviour change in your organization.
